John A. Scanelli, M.D.
Dr. Scanelli is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee surgery. He is fellowship trained in both joint replacement and sports medicine. After graduating from medical school and residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Virginia, he completed additional fellowships in hip and knee replacement at the Anderson Clinic and in Dunedin, New Zealand. He also completed a sports medicine fellowship at the North Sydney Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in Sydney, Australia.
Dr. Scanelli specializes in the anterior approach for total hip replacement, a minimally invasive, tissue-sparing surgical technique. He is co-authoring a book chapter for the first textbook to be published exclusively on the direct anterior approach to the hip and has published research on the anterior approach for hip replacement. Dr. Scanelli also specializes in partial and total knee replacement as well as complex revision surgery. He utilizes the latest multimodal pain management and rapid rehabilitation protocols for enhanced recovery following hip and knee replacement.
Under the guidance of Dr. Leo Pinczewski, a pioneer in ACL reconstruction who is one of the highest volume ACL surgeons in the world, Dr. Scanelli received extensive training in his arthroscopic techniques for both primary and revision ACL reconstruction. He also gained experience in osteotomies, a joint preservation procedure for younger patients with knee arthritis.
Dr. Scanelli has published numerous articles in orthopedic journals, authored book chapters and spoken at national and international orthopedic meetings. He is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and a reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty. His greatest pleasure in taking care of patients is improving their quality of life.
